ABOUT THE LINHAY

The Linhay at Lower Chilverton was probably built in the !700’s again to serve the growing farm. It was converted in 2005/6 to a thatched glass fronted holiday cottage with living accommodation upstairs to take advantage of the views across the fields. Because of the listing restrictions we had to use all glass but the final effect is wonderful. The word Linhay means ‘open fronted barn’.  When we bought the property it was used to store about 22,000 bottles of English wine which was made in the adjoining building.

The Linhay makes good use of its position, the countryside and views and enables guests to watch the wildlife. Common visitors are foxes, rabbits, hares and deer. There is good birdlife around including buzzards and owls and sometimes a kingfisher visits the ponds. It is ideally situated midway between Dartmoor and Exmoor and the north and south Devon coasts but the area itself is really quiet. Its usual to see and hear tractors going past but very little else. Exeter city with all its history is about 12 miles away and offers everything you would expect of a university town. There are museums, theatres, shops and great eateries. Plymouth is within easy reach with its famous aquarium and of course the warships passing Plymouth Hoe.
